A Concept Definition Map for Student Exploration

A Concept Definition Map is a visual organizer that helps students explore and define new vocabulary words or concepts. It goes beyond a simple dictionary definition by encouraging students to analyze the following to connect to their prior learning: 

  • Concept: The new word or concept being defined is placed in the center of the map.
  • Characteristics: Key features or attributes of the concept are listed.
  • Examples: Specific examples of the concept are provided.
  • Non-examples: Examples that do not fit the concept are listed to clarify its boundaries.

Use a Concept Definition Map to:

  1. Introduce a new concept: Present a new vocabulary word or concept from a text students are reading.
  2. Guide students in completing the map: Facilitate a discussion to analyze the concept’s characteristics, generate examples and non-examples, and connect it to students’ prior knowledge.
  3. Encourage discussion and revision: Have students share their maps and definitions, discuss any discrepancies, and revise their maps as needed.

By using concept definition maps, you can transform vocabulary instruction from passive memorization to active exploration and deeper understanding!
