Educators currently employed in an Ohio public school or district, chartered non-public school, community school or educational service center (ESC) are responsible for the design of an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP), subject to the approval of the Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC). The IPDP should be based on the needs of the educator, the students, the school and the school district, and be aligned with the professional educator standards adopted by the State Board of Education. In accordance with the approved plan, Teaching Channel courses can be included in IPDP for renewal. Choose from Pathway 1 or 2 as listed above.

Educators not currently employed in an Ohio public school or district, chartered non-public school, community school or ESC must renew with six semester hours of coursework from an accredited institution of higher ed. Choose Pathway 2 as listed above.

Educators must complete all renewal coursework and submit their renewal application prior to October 1 of the expiration year of the license to be renewed, or the renewal requirement increases to nine semester hours.

License Holders w/ Reading or Phonics Coursework Limitations

All candidates who request a standard Resident Educator license for Early Childhood, Primary Childhood, Middle Childhood or Intervention Specialist areas must successfully complete teaching of reading coursework. This coursework includes:

  • Nine semester hours in the teaching of reading
  • A three-semester hour course in the teaching of phonics (in the context of reading, writing and spelling)

Why You Should Enroll in Courses as a Long-Term Investment

In many districts, teachers gain a salary increase when they accrue graduate-level credits. But have you considered the money you leave on the table when you delay accruing those credits?

Teachers who gain an extra $8K in salary 20 years before retirement bring home an extra $160K in earnings. And those teachers may also receive a higher pension by finishing their careers at an advance salary level. Compare that to the educator who achieves that goal 10 years later: $80K less income. See what credit accrual could mean for you by using our salary calculator. Be sure to check our course bundles that let you accrue credits at less cost and on a pay-as-you-learn plan.
