Community building and culture are the foundation of teaching and learning. The teacher in this next video describes it this way, “Establishing a strong classroom culture is like the bed you plant the flowers in. You have to have that in order for things to flourish and grow”. Students can only thrive in a classroom community built on trust, safety, and respect. A classroom pledge students write together establishes goals for the year. Students take ownership of their classroom environment and remind one another when they are not following the pledge. As you watch, think about the cooperative ways you can involve students in community and culture building throughout the year.
Reflection Question: How can you increase student ownership and responsibility for maintaining a positive classroom environment? |
