Teaching Channel offers courses for Ohio educators, counselors and administrators to meet Ohio SBOE license renewal, salary advancement, and professional growth through 300+ course options.
Ohio Licensure Pathways
Licensure Pathways & Requirements
Ohio educators may progress through a tiered licensure system and after obtaining a Resident Educator License:
- Professional Educator License (5-Year): The standard renewable license obtained after obtaining a Resident Educator License (4-Year)
- Senior Professional Educator License (5-Year): An advanced credential obtaining a Masters Degree.
- Lead Professional Educator License (5-Year): An advanced credential obtaining a Masters Degree and a Teacher Leader Endorsement
Ohio has recently made the following updates to their licensure requirements:
Educators may convert their Professional Teaching licenses to the new Elementary and Middle School (PK-8) license or to the Adolescence to Young Adult (7-12) license at renewal.

Teacher Professional, Senior Professional or Lead Professional License Renewal Requirements
Ohio SBOE Requirements
Renewed every 5 years:
Complete one, or a combination of the following:
Teaching Channel Pathway
6 semester hours of graduate-credit coursework related to classroom teaching or area of licensure.
Complete two 3 semester credit Graduate-Level Courses related to classroom teaching or licensure area = 6 semester hours
OR
18 continuing education units (CEUs) aligned with an approved individual professional development plan (IPDP).
18 CEUs = 180 contact hours
Complete three 3-credit Flex Credit Courses* related to classroom teaching or licensure area.
One 3-credit Flex Credit course = 4.5 CEUs/45 contact hours
Expired License Renewal
Ohio Educators with an expired license will complete 9 semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching or area of licensure.
This requirement can be met through the following Teaching Channel path:
Complete three 3-credit courses to earn 9 credits
OR
Complete 27 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Teaching Channel partners with highly respected colleges and universities to provide versatile and effective continuing education graduate credit courses for educators.
Teaching Channel University Partners are accredited by various agencies including: CAEP/TEAC/NCATE, HLC, NECHE, NWCCU WSCUC. ACE is our preferred partner for many reasons including its accredited status and educator-focused graduate-level programs.
*Flex courses should be approved by employing school or district’s local professional development committee (LPDC), in accordance with the individual professional development plan (IPDP)

Ohio SBOE Reading & Phonics Requirements
Do you hold an out-of-state Elementary and Middle School (PreK-8) or any Intervention Specialist license (including PreK-5, PreK-12, and K-12) and need to obtain Ohio SBOE reading and phonics requirements?

Ohio SBOE approves the following Teaching Channel 3-semester credit reading and phonics courses:
Complete 9 semester hours of coursework in teaching reading.
Choose three reading courses:
- Course 5078: Solving the Reading Puzzle: Using Assessment to Drive Intervention
- Course 5150: Magnifying Reading Intervention Through Science and Research
- Course 5227: Shifting Your Focus to the Science of Reading
- Course 5260: Literacy in the Content Areas I
- Course 5261: Literacy in the Content Areas II
- Course 5262: Processes and Acquisition of Literacy Skills
- Course 5263: Materials for Teaching Literacy
- Course 5264: Instruction in Literacy
- Course 5265: Assessment of Literacy
- Course 5269: Building Comprehension with the Science of Reading
- Course 5281: What Every Educator Needs to Know about the Science of Reading
- Course 5293: Effective Fluency Instruction for Skilled Reading

Complete 3 semester hours of coursework in teaching phonics (in the context of reading, writing and spelling).
School Counselor or Orientation and Mobility Specialist License Renewal Requirements
Ohio SBOE Requirements
Renewed every 5 years:
Complete one, or a combination of the following:

Credit Conversion:
- 1-credit Teaching Channel graduate-level, continuing education course = 3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) = 30 Contact Hours
- 2-credit Teaching Channel graduate-level, continuing education course = 6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) = 60 Contact Hours
- 3-credit Teaching Channel graduate-level, continuing education course = 9 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) = 90 Contact Hours
Flex Credit Conversion:
- 3-credit Teaching Channel flex-credit course = 4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) = 45 Contact Hours
Active License Holders:
Ohio Educators currently employed in an Ohio School, District or Education Service Center may meet renewal requirements through the following two Teaching Channel paths:
- Complete two 3-credit courses to earn 6 credits equivalent to 18 CEUs
or - Complete four Flex-based 3-credit courses to earn 18 CEUs
Ohio Educators NOT currently employed in an Ohio School, District or Educational Service Center may meet renewal requirements through the following Teaching Channel path:
- Complete two 3-credit courses to earn 6 credits
Expired License Holders:
Ohio Educators with an expired license will complete 9 semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching or area of licensure. This requirement can be met through the following Teaching Channel path:
- Complete three 3-credit courses to earn 9 credits
Each Teaching Channel 3-credit course requires approximately 45 hours for course completion.
Educators must complete all renewal requirements and submit their renewal application prior to October 1st of the expiration year of the license to be renewed, or the renewal requirement increases to nine semester hours.
District requirements vary; please refer to your contract or seek district guidance or pre-approval as needed.
