Formative Assessment Strategy: Show Your Cards

Check for student understanding throughout your lessons with the Show Me Your Cards formative assessment strategy. When teaching a new or difficult concept, ask students to hold up a colored card to demonstrate their comfort level or understanding: green for “I got it”, yellow for “I’m not quite sure”, and red for “I am confused and need more teaching.”

Use this feedback to shape instruction and personalize learning. While some students may be hesitant at first to show their cards, with consistent encouragement, this strategy builds resiliency and reminds students that struggle and mistakes are important steps in the learning process. These colored cards can be used in several different ways in class – check out the video for some new ideas you can use!

Reflection Question:
How does the teacher respond to feedback that the colored cards provide?
