Building Background Knowledge With Gallery Walks

The gallery walk uses guiding questions to help students learn content while practicing literacy skills – with the purpose of building background knowledge. Watch as this teacher sets her students up for success through the use of illustrations and text at multiple stations throughout the classroom. By viewing pictures, reading text, and writing notes and questions at each station, students engage with specific content and collect new learning they can apply in future reading or writing activities. Teacher modeling, pair-share for oral language practice, visual references, sentence stems – all of these effective strategies are embedded in the glorious gallery walk.
