Handmade gifts are one of my favorite parts of the holiday season! A sweet or savory treat baked in the kitchen, a gift that is handcrafted by sewing, knitting, woodworking, jewelry making, or any form of artwork–they are all special and unique. Handmade gifts demonstrate that the recipient is worthy of your most precious resource–time! When I’m using my hands to create, I often reflect on the recipient and all they mean to me. The holiday season can be hectic and overwhelming, and gifts that are made by hand are an opportunity to slow down, create with intention, and savor the opportunity to show loved ones you care.
This December, why not set aside an hour or two to make gifts with your students? They will appreciate having a gift to share with someone special in their lives, and everyone will enjoy time to get creative and have fun. Gather any materials you have on hand–simple colored paper, markers, and glue are often enough–or incorporate popsicle sticks, yarn, tissue paper, paints, glitter, magazines, fabric scraps, or anything else you have available. Some students love unstructured creating time and will dive right into making the perfect gift! Others will appreciate a bit more guidance, so we’ve gathered ideas below for inspiration. Happy making and gifting!
