NELW 2020: Video Coaching Panel Discussion

Recently, members of the Insight ADVANCE team had the opportunity to participate in the 3rd annual National Education Leaders’ Workshop (NELW) Conference, which took place in Atlanta. The event is organized by our partners at Insight Education Group, and supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The NELW Conference draws hundreds of educators from around the country who share a passion and desire to network, share, and learn—with the goal of working together to create bold and equitable change in their schools, districts, and states. Keynotes featured Kaya Henderson, former Chancellor of DC Public Schools and now of Teach For All, and Dr. Michael Moody, cofounder of Insight ADVANCE and Insight Education Group. Panel discussions and sessions were focused on equity, teacher recruitment and retention, district and school strategic planning, and instructional coaching.

I had the pleasure of leading a couple of sessions—including a panel discussion about the power of ADVANCEfeedback® and video technology for professional learning. The discussion featured three outstanding educators who have used video for years and in a variety of use cases such as teacher preparation, self-reflection and peer feedback via PLCs, and instructional coaching. Panelists included:

  • Dennis Dotterer, Assistant Professor at Winthrop University
  • Shrhonda Hemingway, Assistant Principal at Easterling Primary School in Marion County Public Schools
  • Rebekah Ralph, Instructor of Educational Technology & edTPA Coordinator at LaGrange College

The feedback from this session was tremendous. Teachers, coaches, and leaders alike shared with me that they took away ideas and strategies that could have immediate impact on their practice and classrooms. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video and then share your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below.
