Hi. I’m Susanne from Learners Edge and I’m here to talk to you today about the outdoor classroom.

As we all know, technology has done wonderful things and enhanced our lives, but, in some way, technology has stolen some things as well.

One of them is time outdoors.

An author by the name of Richard Louv wrote the book called The Last Child in the Woods. In his book, he discusses lack of vitamin N or Nature-Deficit Disorder. One way that we can reverse that trend is to bring our children outdoors.

Here are three tips.

  1. Number one, bring your students outdoors into the outdoor space, and make sure that they’re comfortable and that they feel safe.
  2. The second tip is be a teacher, but be a teacher outside. In other words, take your lessons outdoors.
  3. Number three, start small. In other words, begin by reading one day. The next day, bring them out and do a reading lesson and writing lesson. And on the last day, bring them outside, do reading, writing, and maybe take them on a nature walk.
