Blogs September is a time of transitions. A transition of seasons from Summer to Fall. A transition from kids playing at the pool to kids playing at the school playground. And definitely a transition for teachers to a classroom of new students’ smiling faces. Transitions can be a challenge for many, but for some children, the transition back to school can be a welcome relief.
Did you know that there are nearly 16 million children in America that are part of a food insecure family? Food Insecurity is defined as the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. When children from these families come back to school, they are typically guaranteed a nutritious meal or two per day. And because of organizations like Blessings in a Backpack, they are often guaranteed nutritious meals on weekends as well.
Learners Edge was introduced to Blessings in a Backpack as we were preparing to celebrate our 15th anniversary and we decided we wanted to be part of this amazing organization. The vision of Blessings in a Backpack is that every school-aged child in America has the nourishment needed to learn and grow. I vividly remember the days when I was a middle school geography teacher and children would come to class hungry. They were in more of a survival mode than a learning mode – this is real and this is heartbreaking. This past school year, Blessings in a Backpack provided nutritious meals for over 93,000 children in more than 1,000 schools across the country. They are making a difference.
In February, Learners Edge donated $10,000 to Blessings in a Backpack. In September, our goal is to donate an additional $5,000 – but we need your help! September 25-29 is National Blessings in a Backpack week. For every course that Learners Edge sells during this week, we’ll donate $10, (up to $5,000 total) to Blessings in a Backpack. Join us on the race to $5,000 – we can do it together!
